The gift-shops may sell ‘Lorna Doone’ biscuits, thimbles, and coasters, but there is hardly an edition of the book itself to be had. It seems the very strategy that enabled Lorna Doone to be imported into the landscape and detached from the author has been the text’s undoing, as it has decayed back into history in popular memory. Lorna Doone was a fictional character created by R.D. Blackmore using the landscape of this area as a basis for the novel. The walk starts in the pleasant village of Malmsmead and continues to Oare Church before heading up the valley containing Badgworthy Water to finish with a walk across the moors.

Lorna Doone is a swashbuckling tale of love, rivalry and revenge. As a child, John Ridd watches as his father is killed by the Doones and swears to avenge his death. Years later, he meets the beautiful Lorna and the attraction is instant, but when Lorna later reveals herself to be a Doone, John is horrified. A Must, for anybody who has ever read Lorna Doone! There is ample car Parking and adequate Toilet facilities, A large gift shop, and a Pub for lunches at reasonable prices. The walk itself follows Badgworthy water, through meadows and a wooded Valley until you reach the High 5/5(48).

Daniel Boone (November 2, [O.S. October 22] – Septem ) was an American pioneer, explorer, woodsman, and frontiersman whose frontier exploits made him one of the first folk heroes of the United gh he also became a businessman, soldier and politician who represented three different counties in the Virginia General Assembly following the American Revolutionary War Father: Squire Boone.   Visitors can walk in through the old stone gate and stroll on the lawns, remembering how John Ridd was sent there by his father, ''a great admirer of learning and well able to write his own name.

Based on a Devon legend, at the heart of Blackmore’s classic novel is the love story between Lorna Doone – a daughter of the local aristocratic outlaw clan the Doones of Bagworth – and the novel’s narrator John Ridd, a strapping, but simple lad who runs the family farm after his father is murdered by a Doone when he was a boy.
